Following the arrest and subsequent release of Iranian-American reporter Roxana Saberi, we are surprised that Hoder’s case has received little media attention. In fact, mentions of Hossein Derakhshan during Saberi’s trial were limited to brief updates such as the following: “Ahmadinejad also urged the chief Tehran prosecutor to allow jailed Canadian-Iranian blogger Hossein Derakhshan the right to fully defend himself.”
We again call on Iran for transparency in the case of Hossein Derakhshan and plead with the Canadian government to defend one of their citizens.

Hossein Derakhshan, aka Hoder, is one of Iran’s most prominent bloggers. In November, it was reported that Hoder had been arrested in Iran, allegedly on charges of spying for the Israeli government. That news has since been confirmed by a number of sources.
Hossein took a highly publicized trip to Israel a few years back which he blogged about, garnering much attention from Israeli media. It is suspected that this trip could be the reason for his detention.
After living in London and Toronto, Derakhshan returned to Iran this fall. Shortly after his return, he stopped updating his blog and Facebook page. His arrest was first reported by Jahan News [Farsi], but was later confirmed by a family member.
There are a number of groups, including DigiActive, and Internet Sans Frontieres [French], advocating for Hoder. We hope to aggregate that information for you here. If you are interested in contributing to the site, please contact us at freehoder@gmail.com.
